Reflection

  • As a student exploring into the field of industrial design, 3-dimensional spaces have always widened my vision. They never cease to challenge me to a new level of perspective. This is how I chose conceptual architectural and nature photography. From one photo-walk to another, I have been searching for reflections that are produced by symbiotic relationships between man-made constructions and natural environment within the capital city of Seoul Korea. My photographs were all taken between day and night, in different exposures and intensity of light. I have observed colors, whether on buildings or skies, playing an important role to mood. Warm colors are calm, because of the comfort and heat provided by lights that break up the darkness. Cool are formal, because the surface is either glazed, polished or smooth in daylight. Neutral colors are pure, because, nonetheless the time of the day, it appears  just as it is. Even our very own eyes capturing these essential elements are dependent on reflected light. Not only reflections of symmetry, mirrors or light should be focused, but also of people, space, and time. People move through space and time because populations are constantly changing. Architecture and natural environment are shaping these people and their movement. Although such societal flows have already been highlighted similarly in the two works of influential photographers Andre Kertesz and Michael Wolf, I am heavily influenced by their works and philosophy. After short but eventful three and a half months of exploring conceptual photography, I now present you my series: "Reflections".
