Conjuring atmospheric melancholia and mystery throughout this series, I am visually reconstructing a personal dream I have relived several times through drawn and photo etched copper intaglios. Each etching depicts a certain layer of the dream, exposing various degrees of anxiety. An unidentified solitary female figure swiftly transitioning into various ambiguous fictional space never shows her face to symbolize a human spirit rather than a particular individual. Although female nudity in art often brings up feminist discourses, the nude female in these series comes from a deeply personal, rather than a strong political or programmatic point of view. Her nudity symbolizes independence and freedom from any culture, allowing her to belong in a timeless fictional space. I’ve titled this series as A Deathless Spell to indicate the figure’s immortality in this dream state, regardless the danger she puts herself into. The series ends with an etching of the female carrying her spirit to represent my experience with sleep paralysis, a state of trance that allows me to momentarily live in the dream world and reality.
